A quick question for my francophone friends

How would you refer to a female French president?  "Mme le President" or "Mme la Presidente" (or some other way altogether)?  I've just been speculating on a scenario which has Villepin and Sarkozy fighting to a draw over the next 18 months, the French Right getting disgusted with both of them and letting someone like Le Pen slip in as the main candidate, which in turn leads to horrified French voters turning en masse to the Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal, who wins the presidency.  Thus my question.

Or maybe Chirac will just decide to run for a third term....

*loves languages like English where this question never arises*

I don't think they'll cancel each other out because unfortunately at the moment? They're pretty much the only viable candidates we have. There's no one else on the right with as high a profile as theirs, and there's so far no one on the left that stands out enough and has enough charisma, drive of a valid program. We're just fucked, really.

Well, there's still 18 months to go, so maybe something will happen. As to Villepin, you can't even argue any longer that he has no chance of winning because he's never held elective office. Michelle Bachelet, the new president of Chile just managed to accomplish that very thing.
