A quick question for my francophone friends

How would you refer to a female French president?  "Mme le President" or "Mme la Presidente" (or some other way altogether)?  I've just been speculating on a scenario which has Villepin and Sarkozy fighting to a draw over the next 18 months, the French Right getting disgusted with both of them and letting someone like Le Pen slip in as the main candidate, which in turn leads to horrified French voters turning en masse to the Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal, who wins the presidency.  Thus my question.

Or maybe Chirac will just decide to run for a third term....

*loves languages like English where this question never arises*

I think both would be fine.
Président actually has a feminine gender (?) which is Présidente.
I'd go for Mme La Présidente. Other words are more tricky because they only have one gender -masculine or feminine. Ministre, for example; so it's Madame Le ministre -but fashion tends to take over and it's vey up-to-date to say "Madame la ministre".

that being said I highly doubt that Ségolène Royal has the necessary stature to become Présidente. She doesn't seem to have much of a political program and as far as charisma is concerned... :( ... Of course I'd vote for her rather than for Sarkozy or De Villepin (I don't believe much in the possibility of Le Pen this time) but really without any enthusiasm.

Jack Lang maybe?

What on earth is that man's background? Every time I see his name I have to stop myself thinking he's British.

i believe he's most well-known as Mitterand's Ministre de la Culture, and especially for creating the Fête de la Musique. that's why i know him, in any case! but then again, i don't know much about politics ... lol

Oh, I know about the ministerial post. I really meant his parentage. "Jack Lang" isn't a very French name, you must admit.

And since I'm logged in both as myself and as Angela, I don't know who LJ will show as responding to your comment; if it shows up as being from Angie, well, it's really me. :-)

D'accord à 100% sur les deux premiers paragraphes... L'ouverture laisse en revanche à désirer !
