J.K. Simmons on TNT tonight

The Michael Jackson verdict almost put this out of my head, but I don't want to forget to let people know that TNT is launching a new show tonight at 9:00 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) called The Closer.  Kyra Sedgwick stars as a crack F.B.I investigator/interrogator heading up a special unit in Los Angeles.  Based on the trailers for the show, J.K. Simmons plays her boss.  Since I knew Simmons as Law & Order's Dr. Skoda before I ever saw him in Oz, I'm glad to see him back on the right side of the law again.

It always weirded me out, seeing Simmons as Dr. Skoda, especially when it involved rape cases or hate crimes, since he did so many of both on OZ.

So did you see him as Schillinger before you saw him as Skoda?

Yes. I watched every episode of Oz starting with season 2, and I quickly caught season 1 in reruns. I rarely watch Law and Order, I only catch it if there's an interesting topic or guest star. I like Law and Order: SVU much better. Chris Meloni, yum!

*Huge* thumbs up on this one. The opening scene alone just knocked my socks off in how they got the tiny details right, with all the cops and forensics people wearing little booties so as not to contaminate the crime scene.

I'm glad i saw your reminder even after you told me. I thought for sure TIVO would pick it up, but it didn't. hmmmmmmmmm

and Riley's comment. It seems all the British crime/mysteries always have the tiny details right.

I've kinda gotten used to Evil Skoda.

BTW, last Tuesday they showed a rerun of SVU down here, an old one I hadn't seen before - the one where Eliot talks about his perp-killing fantasies and almost loses his job over it. When Skoda examined him I just sat there, quietly and completely freaking out.

Oh man, me too! I couldn't believe it - I kept saying, "That's Keller and Schillinger! You guys broke Beecher's arms!" And it looked like J.K. must have bleached his hair for Oz - I never realised that before. I watched 'The Gift' when it was on the other night and J.K. is in that too - playing a cop with a really bad moustache. I've seen it before, but had no idea that was him.

Aaarrgghhh!! He was on The Gift?! I missed it!!!

Back to Svu - I kept thinking of when Keller kissed Vern. Not in the gym, there's another bit after Beecher goes back to Oz, in case you haven't discovered that tidbit yet.

Ah yes, but that kiss didn't happen until *after* they did this SVU scene, considering it's from Season 1 (shot in 2000) and Season 6 of Oz wasn't shot 'til 2002. (Yeah, I'm just full useful info like that).

So at the time they kissed, both Skoda and Stabler were established characters in SVU and had shared at least one psychologically intense scene together?

Ahhh... the transgressiveness...

Skoda on SVU???? Why don't I remember that? Was it a crossover episode with the original L & O?
Jun. 14th, 2005 06:26 pm (UTC)
I'm not so sure about crossover, but Skoda's been on SVU a couple of times that I've seen. This one is an old episode. It starts out with Eliot picking his daughter up at the beach and on the way home they come across a body being burned. Eliot is furious because one of his children actually see this one, and he fantasizes about killing whoever's responsible. He admits it to a shrink and Skoda is brought in to examine him to make sure his violent fantasises aren't likely to boil over into real life. Hence freaking out mentioned above.

You should have that cookie by now, BTW.

It was an episode from Season 1 before they got BD Wong on the show - at that point SVU didn't have it's own shrink so they just borrowed Skoda from L&O. He was on a few eps if I remember correctly.

Oh! It wouldn't have meant anything to me at the time, of course, but now I'll have that to look forward to when I finally get around to watching the Season 1 SVU DVDs. Thanks for the explanation. :-)

The Michael Jackson verdict bothered me a lot more than I thought it would.

MJ is comparing his acquittal to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the release of Nelson Mandela. Meanwhile, at least some of the jurors are saying publicly that they believe Jackson has molested boys in the past, but they just don't think the prosecution proved its case in this instance. I suppose we should all be happy, because this is the way the jury system is supposed to work, but it's really hard for me to feel that there's anything good about this outcome.
