Thursday, November 11th

Thursday, Nov. 11th.  Veterans' Day here in the U.S., other names elsewhere, still "Armistice Day" for the historically inclined who know the significance of "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month".

Thursday, Nov. 11th.  The day that marked the end of the First World War (the "Great War" as it was called in more innocent times before we knew that our wars had to be numbered).

Thursday, Nov. 11th.  Eighty-six years after the fighting stopped in the "war to end all wars", and this is the news today:  Iraq is back on the front page of the newspaper as the battle for Falluja continues; French citizens are under attack in the Ivory Coast; Dutch tolerance is fraying following the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh and reprisals against the Dutch Muslim community; the ongoing tragedy that is Israel/Palestine is marking time while the ramifications of Yassir Arafat's death are explored.
