J.K. Simmons

I don't know whether any fans of "Oz" will read this, but if you do, and you want to see J.K. Simmons channeling Vern Schillinger instead of playing nice (Dr. Skoda on "Law and Order", the Farmers Insurance commercials), then go see "Whiplash" if it's playing in your city, or add it to your Netflix queue. Simmons plays a music instructor called Terence Fletcher in a performance that I think is worthy of an Oscar nod (as is the performance of his student, played by Miles Teller). Oh, and the jazz that you'll hear in the film isn't half-bad, either.

OOOH good to know!

JK Simmons is wasted as a nice man in things really. Not that he's not totally believable in those roles, but he was just so fantastically good as Vern. A monster but with juuust the slightest flickers of likeability.

My fave Vern scene of all time was the one after he'd killed his son by sending him smack in the hole. He was really cold, but really sad at the same time. And he did this one sniffle.

And then he was so pathetically happy to see the other son. And there's his almost childlike reactions of distress when that white supremacist preacher or whatever he was came into it and read him his pedigree. And the hilarious losing his shit about his name being mispronounced. God he's a good actor.

You will LOVE him in this film (you'll want to keep his characterr away with a ten-foot pole, but Simmons is just brilliant). And I completely agree that he's wasted playing likeable characters.
