The film no one's probably heard of, and the one worth tracking down if you like creepy, unexplained, apocalyptic stories, is Vanishing on 7th Street. As for the remakes, Dragon Tattoo was better than I thought it would be, but still not as good as the Swedish original. And Tinker, Tailor did an excellent job of turning a complex John le Carré novel (a six-hour PBS miniseries with Alec Guinness as Smiley) into a taut film. I still think the PBS version is the gold standard, but the remake stands on its own two feet with an outstanding cast (and it's joined my DVD library).
