  1. Southern California's burning again.  Montecito (Santa Barbara County) on Thursday; Sylmar (Los Angeles County, 20 miles or so northeast of me) starting Friday evening and only about 20% contained; Anaheim Hills, Chino Hills, Brea, Yorba Linda (mostly Orange County) starting yesterday morning, with fires now merging and less than 10% contained.  CBS started round-the-clock, no-commercial-breaks television coverage at 11:00 p.m. Friday night; they've now been broadcasting for over 31 hours, and I've had the television on for every one of those hours except when I was out during the day yesterday.  The basic statistics:  Over 20,000 acres burned, hundreds of homes destroyed or damaged, more than 10,000 people evacuated (evacuation statistics are just from the Sylmar fire).
  2. We used to have "fire season" (starting in July and ending in September/October), but now they're saying that's a thing of the past, and going forward fire season is going to be year-round.  (Take near-drought conditions, tinder-dry brush, hot weather (in the 90s the start of this third week in November), humidity in the single-digits, and the autumn Santa Ana winds blowing through at 60-70 mph, and it's a recipe for disaster.)
  3. TPTB in the IS department at work have finally gotten around to limiting access to LJ.  I can still post and comment, but trying to access my flist brings up a message saying that's banned as a social networking site.  So I'll have to keep up with everyone's news in the evening from home.  I'm playing catch-up now; skip = 100.
  4. I started my commentary on the next installment of the Scotland vacation posts, but got sidetracked by the fires.  Maybe tonight after I get home from visiting my dad....
  5. Ditto on Silvio's, Nico's, and Kat's birthday greetings....

Re your comments about "fire season" -- It *does* seem to go on year-round now. It's interesting, but scary, to read that it's true, and why. I hope you stay out of harm's way.

And I hear you about skip=100. I've done a self-imposed work-ban on LJ and I feel like I'm perenially behind and totally out of the loop!

I'm glad you're okay, sweetie. Are you in any actual danger?
