My last book read was by a free black American who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana in 1841 and only managed to be freed 12 years later - apparently they made a movie of it. It was Solomon Northup's story, the book is called Twelve Years a Slave, and was excellent for dismissing the sometimes (even now) heard theory that slavery might not have been good, but was acceptable if the slave-owner was benevolent... Something everyone should read, particularly every American.

Though I have been awful about reading... not entirely my fault, though, started
Death in Venice but couldn't get into it... might have to try again.
